Chapter Eleven

Though it was not uncommon for Holmes to disappear for long periods of time without any form of contact with me, it was impossible for me to keep from wondering where the detective had gotten off to this time and what he might be up to.

Often, Holmes took trips to various places in order to gather information relevant to our cases and told me nothing until the case was either solved or there was a necessity to share what he had gathered. Now, time was running very short when it came to the arrival of the next full moon—and Holmes’ last instructions to me had been related to its arrival.

I had little time to ponder the whereabouts and activities of Holmes, due to the fact that I shared the workload of Thorpe’s patients with two other doctors from the districts adjacent to Soho until a suitable replacement could be found to take over. On several occasions, my rounds on behalf of the late doctor’s patients had taken me past the boardinghouse where Holmes and I had met with Miss Pennybrook. Each time, I had fought back the urge to check in with her, that was, until this particular day. I had just approached on my way to see another of Thorpe’s patients when that surly man, Harold Kemp, came out of the house in a bluster and continued down the street in front of me. Immediately, my inquisitive mind seized on the event.

What is the connection between Miss Pennybrook and Kemp?

Remembering how he had been at the boardinghouse to see Miss Pennybrook at the same time as Holmes and I caused me to pause in mid-stride. I remembered that she had refused to see him that night, and I had forthwith put the distasteful man out of my mind until just now. Perhaps a surprise visit to Miss Pennybrook—fresh on the tail of Mister Kemp’s exit—would stir up some new little tidbit to add to our case. I checked my pocket watch, and lo, I was a few minutes early for my next medical appointment. Without further hesitation, I marched up to the residence and rang the bell. Admittedly, my heart was thumping in my chest. After all, it wasn’t often that one met with a werewolf alone.

“Poppycock,” I whispered to myself.

“Doctor Watson.” The matron smiled upon opening the heavy door. “Please, do come in.”

“I do apologize; my visit is quite unannounced.”

She removed my hat and coat. “No apology necessary, Doctor. Miss Pennybrook is not at home presently, but I do expect her at any moment. You are welcome to join me for tea, which is not something I suggest to all of the callers to this house.” She lowered her tone as she spoke and I picked up on her insinuation of Mister Kemp. “The man has become a constant pest over the past weeks and I am on the verge of calling Scotland Yard to see what can be done about him!”

“You have the patience of Job, my good lady,” I said.
